A hammer drill vibrates in a back and forth motion. I've had a Makita 10.8v pistol impact for a year & a half, & I can honestly say it is the greatest power tool of all time. But it looks like for $49 I can pickup a refurbished corded hammer drill, which probably makes more sense for me. check over here I wouldn't think of driving a screw into a 2×4 without it.

They are not interchangeable as far as their purpose is concerned.
